The launch of ACCESS – Accelerating Access to Low Carbon Urban Mobility Solutions through Digitalization marked an important moment for discussions on smart and sustainable mobility in Ecuador. The project works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from passenger and freight transport systems in cities across Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
ACCESS is financed by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUKN) and coordinated by UNEP. In Ecuador, implementation is led by the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, in collaboration with UN-Habitat Basic Urban Services, UEMI, ICLEI and UNDP, with the support of SeDEM.

Opening the conversation on digitalisation
The two-day launch event created a space to introduce ACCESS and deepen discussions on the opportunities and challenges of digitalising passenger transport and urban logistics in Ecuador. A key focus was to align the project with national and city-level priorities, ensuring that planned activities respond to the country’s mobility context.
The programme opened with welcoming remarks from representatives of UNDP, the German Embassy in Ecuador and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation, setting the stage for the discussions that followed.
Perspectives from policy, research and practice
Throughout the first day, keynote interventions and panel discussions brought together experts from UNEP, UNDP, UNSAM and ModeMat, with moderation by ICLEI. The exchanges offered different perspectives on digitalisation in transport and helped frame the discussions around both its potential and its challenges in Ecuador.
Building on E-Moviliza’s experience
The second day was organised jointly with the E-Moviliza Project, placing ongoing electric mobility efforts at the centre of the conversation. The programme included the launch of E-Moviliza’s cross-docking platform and e-mobility pilot, followed by a review of the project’s results.
Discussions then focused on how ACCESS can add a digital layer to the ongoing pilot and contribute to its sustainability.
Moving forward
The event brought together national and local transport authorities, private sector representatives, academia and civil society. Across both days, discussions focused on the pilots and activities to be implemented under ACCESS.
We thank all participants, speakers and partner institutions for their engagement and contributions, which provide a solid basis for the work ahead.
