Closing a chapter: TRANS-SAFE’s contribution to safer mobility in Africa

TRANS-SAFE brought together transport professionals, policymakers, researchers and practitioners in Cape Town for its final event, hosted by the University of Cape Town and UITP. The gathering marked the close of three years of work and reflected on lessons from demonstration activities in Cape Town, Kumasi, Kigali and Lusaka.

From local action to safer transport systems

The programme revisited the project’s Living Labs, highlighting interventions such as walkability mapping, road safety improvements around school zones, post-crash response training and digital speed recording. Discussions emphasized the importance of data, stakeholder engagement and policy adoption in taking successful approaches further.

The event also explored safety in BRT systems through a joint session with eBRT2030, as well as the role of gender-responsive approaches in road safety, infrastructure, services and policy.

Looking beyond the project

The final discussion focused on TRANS-SAFE’s legacy, including funding, governance and how the Safe System approach can continue beyond the project’s funding period. The event closed by reinforcing the importance of evidence, community involvement, inclusive design and sustained commitment to advancing safer roads in African cities.
