E-Moviliza reviews electric mobility pilot progress

Within the framework of the E-MOVILIZA project, the Fourth Meeting of the Technical Advisory Group for the E-Moviliza project pilot, “Support for the Transition towards Low-Carbon Electric Mobility in Ecuador,” was held as part of ongoing efforts to advance climate change planning and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollution in the transport sector.

Supporting Ecuador’s transition to low-carbon electric mobility


The project, formally titled “Support for the Transition towards Low-Carbon Electric Mobility in Ecuador,” is financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF7). Its implementation is led by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAE), in coordination with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Technology (MIT), with the support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).


During the session, the main progress, preliminary results, and lessons learned from the implementation of the electric mobility pilot were presented. The pilot made it possible to assess the use of electric vehicles in real-world urban logistics and distribution operations.


Key themes discussed during the meeting


One of the topics addressed was good practices for promoting gender equality in sustainable mobility and logistics, highlighting the importance of creating greater opportunities for women’s participation in a sector that has traditionally had lower female representation.


Technical recommendations were also shared for implementing logistics schemes using cross-docking platforms, highlighting their potential to consolidate goods, optimize distribution operations, and facilitate the use of electric vehicles for last-mile trips. The experience developed during the pilot has helped identify opportunities and aspects that can be considered to strengthen this type of logistics model in Ecuadorian cities.



Preliminary results and operational insights


One of the main highlights of the meeting was the presentation of the preliminary results of the electric mobility pilot, based on data collected during the operations of the participating companies. These results provided a closer look at the performance of electric vehicles, the use of the cross-docking platform, and the benefits achieved under real working conditions.


The indicators presented included kilometers traveled, energy consumption, emissions avoided, total weight of transported cargo, and energy consumption, as well as information related to operating costs. A comparative analysis with conventional diesel vehicles was also presented, allowing for an estimation of differences in costs and potential economic savings associated with the use of electric vehicles.


In addition to the operational and environmental indicators, the pilot has made it possible to collect information on the perceptions of participating companies, their experiences using the vehicles, and the opportunities for improvement identified throughout the process. These inputs contribute to understanding not only the performance of the technology, but also the conditions needed to facilitate its adoption by the private sector.


Strengthening the future of electric mobility in Ecuador


The information collected during the pilot provides valuable input for continuing to analyse the feasibility of electric mobility in Ecuador’s urban logistics operations and for identifying opportunities for improvement in infrastructure, operational models, training, and public policy development.


The Fourth Meeting of the Technical Advisory Group reaffirmed the importance of joint efforts among the public and private sectors, academia, and cooperation organizations to support the transition towards cleaner, more efficient, sustainable, and inclusive transportation systems.


Through E-Moviliza, knowledge and practical experiences continue to be generated to strengthen electric mobility in Ecuador and contribute to the development of solutions adapted to the real needs of companies and cities.
