Electric BRT in practice: Discover the eBRT2030 City Profiles

Four cities with very different realities are actively exploring what electric Bus Rapid Transit looks like in practice.

The newly published City Profiles of Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Curitiba and Kigali take a closer look at how this transition is unfolding on the ground. Each city operates within its own governance structure, financial context, and level of BRT maturity.

Together, the profiles show that there is no single pathway. What matters is how electric BRT is planned, financed, and operated within real local conditions.

These City Profiles are part of eBRT2030, a project advancing innovative solutions for electric Bus Rapid Transit to support more sustainable urban transport. The initiative works across different urban contexts to demonstrate a new generation of eBRT systems that are both technically feasible and economically viable, while exploring automation and connectivity as part of long-term system performance.

The four cities are members of the eBRT2030 International Cluster, selected through an open call coordinated by UEMI, UITP and VUB. The profiles walk through local transport ecosystems, institutional arrangements, and operational realities, offering practical insights for cities exploring electric BRT as a scalable option over the coming decade.
